GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - More than 1,000 hours of service has been paid to the community by members of the Dominican Sisters - Grand Rapids.

Now, 19 sisters are celebrating their Jubilees.

Dominican Days wrapped up Sunday in Grand Rapids with almost 235 sisters in the congregation celebrating their service. They traveled from Peru, Honduras, Chimbote, San Pedro Sula, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Montana. But most of the sisters were born and raised in Michigan.

Those honored Sunday, known as Jubilarians, have served anywhere from 25 to 80 years. They include teachers, school administrators, community volunteers, artists, and social workers.

Two sisters in Grand Rapids say they've grown in their faith every year.

"Over the years, especially since Vatican II, things opened up, and we became aware of our responsibilites beyond us, our spirituality, including many more things of peace and justice," said Sister Mary Ellen McDonald.

"I've been living here at Marywood for 75 years almost and I would not change that. It's a growth that I can be of service to my Sisters and to the community as well," said Sister Phyllis Mrozinski.

The four cornerstones of their service include prayer, study, common life, and ministry.
