Pere Marquette Beach, Muskegon

MUSKEGON, Mich (WZZM) - Around 200 people gathered at Pere Marquette Beach Tuesday to compete in a friendly game of beach volleyball. The game attracted such a large group because it was two stories up in the air on top of 16 steel shipping containers.

The event was a surprise for Megan Haan, 15, a Grand Rapids area teen who is battling bone cancer. The event was a way her close friends from Wellspring Prep High School and her family could lift the teen's spirits.

Around 1 p.m. Megan and her family arrived at the beach to a loud cheer. The teen covered her face as the group rushed her parents' car to reveal the surprise.

"I was surprised, I had no idea at all", Hann said.

Her parents told their daughter she was going to the beach for a day with the family. During the afternoon the group took turns climbing scaffolding to get on top of the shipping containers. The day included a pizza party 30 feet above the beach and lots of photographs with friends.

The shipping containers will be removed from the beach starting Wednesday morning.
