HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - Holland's Big Red lighthouse is getting an unexpected makeover this week. The lighthouse was just painted three years ago but has since faded and turned pink.
"The lighthouse typically receives a fresh coat of paint every 10 years," explained John Gronberg, President, Holland Harbor Historical Lighthouse Commission. "Unfortunately there has been a glitch with the last coat of paint causing it to fade after just three years."
The Holland Lighthouse was last painted in 2009.
It costs $20,000 to paint the lighthouse. Holland-based Lamar Construction is volunteering labor for the project. RepcoLight is working with the group to provide the paint.
Work started Monday and should take about a week to complete.
