NWS: Lake Michigan waterspouts possible today

UPDATE 4:00 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS (NWS) - Thunderstorms over Lake Michigan... the areas affected include Grand Haven to Manistee, adjacent open waters out to mid lake.

At 3:21 pm EDT... Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms that may be capable of producing water spouts 22 nm west of Little Sable Point... moving east at 20 knots.

The thunderstorms will be near the White lake pierheads around 4:25 pm EDT.

Showers and thunderstorms can produce waterspouts with little or no advance warning. Seek safe harbor if a waterspout is spotted.


GRAND RAPIDS (NWS) - Rapidly developing storms over Lake Michigan. The areas affected include... St. Joseph to Holland MI... Lake Michigan from St. Joseph to Holland mi 5nm offshore to mid lake.

At 235 pm EDT...Doppler radar indicated a line of storms that may be capable of producing waterspouts from 10 nm north of the South Haven light to 30 nm northwest of the St. Joseph light. These storms were drifting southeast at 5 knots.

The storms could pass near... The Saugatuck pierheads...The South Haven light and the St. Joseph light.

Showers and thunderstorms can produce waterspouts with little or no advance warning. Seek safe harbor if a waterspout is spotted.

Precautionary/preparedness actions... A special marine warning may eventually be required. Boaters should consider heading for shore before the storm arrives.
