GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) - A 15-year-old Grand Haven boy suffered serious injuries when he tried to ignite a homemade bomb Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened around 2:45 p.m. at a home in the 12000 block of Lakeshore Drive.
Our partner, the Grand Haven Tribune reports the boy was alone in his yard when a homemade bomb blew up as he tried to ignite it. The blast blew open a gate to the back yard.
Next-door neighbor, Kelly LaMore said she heard the explosion while she was doing paperwork.
"I thought it was probably a car accident," she said.
LaMore said she ran outside.
"It was horrible," she said. She declined to say any more.
The boy suffered serious burns when black powder ignited. He had wounds to his chest, arms, hands and face. He was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Neighbors say the boy loved to build and repair things. "He's a very talented kid with build and repair stuff," Chuck Wierengo said. "More so than any kids his age."
The extent of the boy's injuries was unknown. The incident remains under investigation.
