LUDINGTON, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Rockford-area couple who hoped to swim across Lake Michigan to raise awareness for post-partum depression have ended their journey just short of their intended destination.

Sara and Jeff Tow left Two Rivers, Wisconsin Tuesday morning.  They planned to swim across the lake to Big Sable Point lighthouse in Ludington State Park.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Tows hit a strong current about 13 miles west of Ludington, and they began to be pushed to the north.  Because of the current and the cold water conditions, the couple switched to kayaks to complete the journey.

The Tows' support boat brought them into Ludington city marina Wednesday night, where medical technicians evaluated their condition.  The medics determined the Tows were "medically unable to continue their swim."

The Tows hope to issue a statement on their trip on Thursday.
