KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Michigan State Police trooper's gun and badge are missing after they were stolen from a vehicle at a Grandville hotel.

Authorities tell WZZM 13 the trooper's state-issued rifle and badge were in a personal vehicle, but the trooper was off duty.

It was discovered stolen at the Holiday Inn Express in Grandville. No one was able to confirm why the officer was at the hotel or if it's protocol to carry a weapon and badge while off duty.

Area police departments were informed of the missing gun and badge, but Michigan State Police did not issue any warnings to the public. WZZM has made multiple requests for interviews regarding this public safety matter. MSP's Rockford post forwarded our reporter's requests to their public affairs office in Lansing and we are waiting for a response.

One year ago, another gun was stolen from a vehicle at the same hotel but was recovered. A juvenile had stolen the weapon and was sent to court.

So far there is no sign of the missing weapon or badge.
