GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Jason Blyveis is the third generation of his family to make windows. Polar Seal Windows was established by his grandfather as Ajax Aluminim in 1950. They made aluminum storm windows then; today they make replacement vinyl windows.

"That's what we do. We make really good vinyl replacement windows and we service the heck out of people," Blyveis told WZZM 13's Peter Ross during a recent tour of the plant on Century, SW.

Blyveis' company is the last to produce windows in the city, he said. It employs 33, many of whom have worked there for decades.

The windows produced by Polar Seal are sold mostly in Michigan and are designed and built here. "Because we make windows in Michigan for Michigan, we do some things differently than our competitors. We use glass best suited for a heating dominated climate such as ours," Blyveis said.

Blyveis says being small, he can't compete on price, but can on service and quality.

"If we can show people, well, we cost more but here's why and what you get for it - some people say 'yeah, I want that - I don't want less than that.'"
