CADILLAC, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 24-year-old Cadillac man is facing charges for child abuse after his girlfriend's one year old son suffered critical injuries.

Detectives are not naming the man, who was arrested Wednesday. The man is expected to appear in Wexford County District Court on Thursday on three counts of first-degree child abuse.

According to police, the suspect was responsible for three separate acts of abuse on the child on different dates, but the most serious injury happened on August 28. On that date, emergency crews were called to a home in the 700 block of South Mitchell Street in Cadillac where the boy had stopped breathing. The suspect, who was caring for the child, has given the boy CPR.

MLive identifies the child as Trenton Ellis. Family members have set up a Facebook page with updates on Trenton's condition.

Detectives say the boy's injuries were "the result of a lack of oxygen." The child was taken to a Cadillac hospital, then flown by Aero Med to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

On August 29, police and child protection services were told about a possible child abuse situation involving the child. After a joint investigation, the Wexford County Prosecutor authorized the warrant against the suspect on the child abuse charges.

Each charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Detectives say thee child is in serious condition at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.
