ALLEGAN (WZZM) - When our wounded soldiers come back from war, it can be challenging for them to get back doing the sports and activities they love. Operation Injured Soldiers aims to help, and Thursday night, they're taking a group of injured veterans skydiving for the first time.

WZZM 13 caught up with Skydive Allegan Wednesday night for a practice run.

They'll tandem drop the soldiers at the Allegan County Fair, and pull a 30-foot American flag down with them.

Skydive Allegan leader Ed Straub has family in the military and says he's honored to put an injured soldier on his back.

"We wouldn't even have the freedom to do something like this if it wasn't for these guys, so I would probably do anything for them. I'd jump them off for free if I could."

Operation Injured Soldiers volunteer First Sgt. Thomas Lindsley organizes events around Michigan like charter boat fishing trips, but this is the first skydiving trip. He calls this rehabilitation in a group setting.

"This is like putting buddies together for the first time that have never seen each other before, best friends, and they may never see each other again. But what a day it is for them to come together and do the brother and sister thing," he said.

You can watch the group skydive Thursday at the Allegan County Fair, but weather may tweak the schedule.

The first group will take off as early as 2 p.m., but they're scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Lindsley said fair organizers will announce the take-off times.

Sgt. Lindsley said the organization is growing, but he wants more soliders to know about OIS and to sign up for events.
