PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Firefighters say a house sustained heavy smoke and water damage following a fire late Thursday afternoon. The fire began around 5:45 p.m. in the 2500 block of Northville Drive NE, that's near the intersection of Plainfield & Jupiter Ave.

Plainfield Township firefighters tell WZZM 13 the flames began in a bedroom and spread to the basement. The heaviest damage was contained at the back of the house.

Crews called for back-up from Grand Rapids and had the fire knocked down in less than 30 minutes.  Everyone inside the house got out safely.

The emergency response tied up evening traffic on Plainfield Avenue. Traffic was flowing freely again by about 7 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
