(Royal Oak-AP) -- Thousands of women have applied for, and gotten, concealed weapons permits since Michigan's revised law took effect last July.

Court rulings protect the identities of permit seekers. But the owner of Target Sports, a shooting range in Royal Oak, estimates the number of women applicants may be as high as 40-percent.

Michigan's law requires that people seeking a concealed weapons permit be 21, pass a safety class, have a clean police record and have no history of mental illness. Previously, permits were given only to applicants who could prove a need to carry the concealed weapon.
