KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - A group of senior citizens surprised shoppers at Woodland Mall Tuesday morning by holding a flash mob. They wanted to send a message that just because they are older, it doesn't mean they're not active.

The shoppers didn't know what to think as a group of seniors from Holland Home gathered in a mall courtyard just before noon. Suddenly, music started playing and the group began to show off their dance moves.

"We're active, busy, we're happy," says Pat Keyser, 77.

"We're alive and well. Even though we live in a retirement home, we enjoy having fun and laugh together," says Willard Van Essen, 88. His good friend Fran VanderWall, 82, says, "We're old in age, but young in spirit!"

The group also learns together. Lynn Bailey, 65, one of the youngest in the group, is a former web designer. "We have just installed our Kindle software so we can borrow books from the library and just go into our cyber lab." Lynn is also learning new skills. "I text my children. They say, 'yeah mom, she's texting.'"

Van Essen also uses his phone to text. He has a favorite App on his iPhone. It shows active flights around Grand Rapids. "These are planes circling around Grand Rapids right now," says VanEssen. He admits it's probably more than he needs, but he's enjoying it.

For all of the seniors it's about changing with the times and living life to its fullest.
