GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- If you plan on voting in the November 6th election, you must be registered no later than the close of business today, October 9th.

Voters can register at their local city or township clerk office or at any Secretary of State branch office.

"I would just encourage everyone to make sure they check their voter registration status and make sure their address is up to date. Get registered to vote, if they are not. If you know anyone and you are not sure if they are registered, give them a call and make sure they have done that today," said Lauri Parks, Grand Rapids City Clerk.

Parks says to register, voters are required to be a United States citizen, at least 18-years-old on Election Day and live in the community you are registering for at least 30 days prior to the election.

"A lot of people think if they have a felony conviction they can not register to vote. As long as you have served your time and are no longer incarcerated, you can register to vote," she said. "You want to check your voter registration status and if you are not registered to vote, go ahead and get registered because you can vote."

Voters can also register by mail by printing out an application online and sending it in. Parks says as long as it has a postmark dated no later than October 9th, clerks will accept it.

"We have decided to stay open, to have some extended hours for voters who want to register or need to vote absentee," said Parks. "So we will be open until 8:00pm tonight. It is also city commission night, so if folks are coming to the city commission meeting and they are planning on voting absentee they can do so right in our office."

The Grand Rapids City Clerk will also have extended hours on October 23rd, October 27th and November 3rd.
