SAUGATUCK/DOUGLAS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Michigan's State Boundary Commission has approved a petition that would consolidate the cities of Saugatuck and Douglas.
The state's director of licensing and regulation is now expected to act on the commission's recommendation and order the consolidation.
Once that happens, the organization called Consolidated Government Committee plans to gather petition signatures to put the issue up to a public vote.
Under state law, if no petitions are filed the consolidation would take effect after 45 days. Jim Storey, an advisor for Consolidated Government -- which favors consolidation -- says the group wants citizens to have a say in the matter.
The effort is designed to save money and eliminate duplicate services between the two communities.
The earliest the issue could go before voters is May 2013, but organizers behind the effort prefer the vote actually happen in November 2013.
