GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Kent County commissioners and the John Ball Zoo Society issued a joint statement Friday discussing the future of the zoo.
The statement is the result of meetings over the last week, organized by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Steelcase Foundation and Frey Foundation.
Part of the statement reads, "The response of community members and leaders to our recent impasse have reinforced that the core beliefs and goals that unify us are stronger than our differences in approach that caused a halt to our discussions. This concerns us and has prompted our joint response and action."
The statement, attributed to John Ball Zoo Society Chair Kyle Irwin and Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Sandi Frost Parrish goes on to say that the two groups will meet for the next 30 days to come up with a plan for the continued governance of the zoo.
Currently, Kent County is responsible for zoo operations and the John Ball Zoo Society is responsible for fundraising and operation as a nonprofit corporation.
