Saturday, a section of Remembrance Road turned into a remembrance of Officer Trevor Slot, who died trying to stop two bank robbers on October 13, 2011.
WALKER, Mich. (WZZM)-One year ago, Officer Trevor Slot died trying to stop two bank robbers.
Saturday, a section of Remembrance Road turned into a remembrance of him. Dozens of people who lived and worked alongside Officer Slot braved the cold rain to honor him.
"The city of Walker and the police department have always been family. I've been retired some 12 years, but that family cohesiveness [still] exists," said Jim VanderMeulen.
"We're all brothers and sisters," added retired Officer Steve Wildey.
One year ago, the Walker Police Department lost a member of its family. Officer Slot was putting out spike strips on I-96 near Marne to stop two bank robbers, when they hit him with their vehicle.
"Police officers are always in the line of fire. They go to the scene of the problem, not away from it," explained Roger Kaliniak, a retired sergeant for the Walker Police Department.
That's why Officer Slot has forever earned the respect of his department and the community.
"The response from the community and beyond has just been overwhelming," added Walker Mayor Rob VerHeulen.
Friday night, football teams from Kenowa Hills and Muskegon honored Officer Slot before their game. His sister also did the coin toss. The permanent tribute came Saturday, when the city officially dedicated a section of Remembrance Road by the police station in his honor. A small tree and memorial stone mark the spot.
"There's no way that we can adequately recognize the loss of our officer, but this is in some small way a permanent reminder to each and every one of us of the sacrifice he made on our behalf," Mayor VerHeulen said Saturday.
VanderMeulen carries his own daily reminder.
"I still wear a wristband with Trevor's name and the date of his death on it," he said.
The section of Remembrance Road that's been renamed is between Wilson Avenue and Kinney Avenue. The Slot family and current Walker police offers did not want to comment during the dedication.
