Two men die in Newaygo crash

CROTON TWP., Mich. (WZZM) - Two men are dead and a third man is in critical condition after a one-car crash Monday night.

The Newaygo County Sheriff's Office reports they were called to a crash on Elm Avenue between 72nd and Croton Road Monday night at about 8:30pm. 

At the scene, a car traveling north on Elm had lost control and left the roadway and hit several trees.  The driver, Deverin Simons, 24, of Newaygo, was pronounced dead the scene. Front seat passenger Richie Aguilar, 27, of Fremont, was pronounced dead after being taken to Spectrum Health.  A backseat passenger, Michael Shortsle, 24, of Fremont was extricated from the car and is in critical condition at Spectrum Health.

The crash remains under investigation, but deputies say that excessive speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
