GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- City leaders say the voter-approved charter amendment decriminalizing the possession of marijuana will take effect on December 6.

Grand Rapids city attorney Catherine Mish issued a statement Thursday, outlining the timetable for implementation of the city's new amendment that makes marijuana possession a civil infraction instead of a criminal offense.  The measure passed in Tuesday's election by a 3-2 margin.

According to Mish, the board of county canvassers must complete its canvass of the results by November 20, then the state board of canvassers must complete its review by November 26.

The next steps are for Grand Rapids City Clerk Lauri Parks to file the charter amendment and vote total information with the Kent County clerk and the Michigan secretary of state, which must be done within 30 days of the election.
