GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The son of Gerald and Betty Ford shared stories of his mother's successful battle against breast cancer -- and how she encouraged others to take up the fight for themselves and others -- at a Grand Rapids event Thursday.

The West Michigan affiliate of Komen for the Cure held its annual "On the Wings of Hope" dinner at the Goei Center on Butterworth St. SW.

President Ford's son, Steve, was the guest speaker. He talked about how courageous and outspoken his mother Betty was during her battle with breast cancer.

"After Mom's surgery, they were back at the White House and they were sitting alone, and Mom in her own special way told Dad, 'I'm so worried that I'll never be able to wear my evening clothes for these White House dinners, and trying to be First Lady'," shared Steve Ford. "And my dad, being my dad, just kind of laughed at her and said, 'Betty, don't be silly. If you can't wear it cut low in the front, then wear it cut low in the back'."

WZZM 13's Juliet Dragos was master of ceremonies for the event, which honored survivors and local medical programs that provide screening, treatment and support for patients.
