Brooke Burke from her video blog
Grand Rapids, MI (WZZM)- We see her every week on Dancing with the Stars, but this season, the host is dealing with a battle of her own.
Brooke Burke-Charvet announced this week that she has thyroid cancer.
On Thursday, the 41-year old mother of four announced the diagnosis through her video blog. She said, "I got my results back and they're not good. I need to have thyroid surgery. A thyroidectomy, which means I'm going to have an incision across my neck."
According Dr. Douglas Notman, a Thyroid Specialist at St. Mary's Healthcare, thyroid cancer is highly treatable. "There is progress that's been made in the field of thyroid cancer in the last 5-10 years, which is remarkable."
According to Dr. Notman, the lump usually appears on the thyroid gland which is located in the middle of your neck. Most of the time, people don't even know they have it. Sometimes, it's not cancerous. "Two weeks ago, I had a patient come to me because her dentist noticed that she had a lump on her thyroid."
Thyroid cancer can happen to anyone, even if they've never had any kind of thyroid disorder. "Women have more cases than men. Unfair, but true."
Burke-Charvet is the picture of good health. Yes, she'll face a tough road ahead as she endures surgery, but her prognosis is very good.
Burke-Charvet likely has the best surgeon around. The thyroid gland is very close to the vocal cords, and given her job, she wants to make sure, nothing is damaged.
