UPDATE: GVSU Student killed in Holland Township

UPDATE: The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a man hit and killed in Holland Township Saturday night.

Kyle Ackerman of Brooklyn, Michigan was at a party at a local hotel when deputies say he walked away to smoke a cigarette.

Ackerman walked into the road and was hit by the SUV driven by 60-year-old Rex Slingerland.

Ackerman was a student at Grand Valley State University.

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)- One man is dead after being struck by an SUV in Holland Township.

Investigators say the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday on US 31 near Felch Street.

Police say Rex Slingerland, 60, of Grand Haven was traveling north on US 31 when a 24-year-old man ran into the roadway.

The pedestrian was struck by the front of Slingerland's 2000 GMC Jimmy.

Police say Slingerland couldn't have avoided the accident

They have not released the victim's name.
