GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A Grand Rapids factory on Broadway, NW has been home to furniture making for over 100 years. Once the Imperial Furniture Company, the site has been home since 1989 to RT London, a leader in designing and constructing furniture for the college market.
RT London's desks, beds, chairs and tables can be found in all of West Michigan's colleges and universities and at schools across the country. Pete Klahorst, a VP, says: "Schools are using furniture to help market to students. It's already a competitive industry just like everything else. They want things in their residence halls - they want a 'wow' factor.
Students help design the furniture - modular, stackable pieces the students can mix and match to personalize their space.
120 people work at the plant. During peak times in the spring and summer, employment jumps to about 200.
Privately owned, the company is committed to keeping jobs in Grand Rapids and making it in Michigan says Klahorst.
"We're committed to showing the world that we can competitively compete in a global marketplace and offer best value to our customer."
