ALLENDALE, Mich. (WZZM) -- November 14 is National Philanthropy Day, and Kent County is among the most generous regions in the country.

According to a new report by GVSU's Johnson Center, in 2010, charitable giving in Kent County topped $600 million. That's nearly 8% higher than the previous year.

More than half of those donations came from people, not groups.

That's actually lower than the rest of the country, likely because more foundations are located in Kent County.

Overall, charitable giving nationwide has dropped with the economic downturn.
