ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- The new firearm deer hunting season is big business for West Michigan processors.
Barb's Deer Processing on 10 Mile Road NE in Algoma Township dressed at least 39 deer this Opening Day, each processed at a price of at least $75. Owner Barb Haveman says fewer hunters are bringing in does because of an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD).
The biggest buck of the day arrived while our cameras were rolling. Mike Winters shot the 13-pointer from his tree stand around 9 a.m. Thursday.
"This is my biggest one ever," says Winters.
Winters plans to have his prize mounted.
"There've been all sizes coming," says Haveman. "A lot of bucks and very few does, which I thank God for that with how this disease has been happening."
Haveman says any leftover meat from this season's deer will be donated to the North Kent Service Center and area churches.
"Everybody is out of work right now and they don't have the food that we should be having and they've got to wait just to buy meat," she says. "Today, meat prices are quite high, so this here is one good thing that I love to do."
