KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM)-- An overnight fire destroyed a playground at Pinewood Park in Kentwood and investigators believe it may have been intentionally set.
The fire began at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning, causing thousands of dollars of damage.
Faith Hommes,15, has visited the park for years and can't believe it may have been intentionally set.
"It makes me angry," says Hommes. "Why would you take this away from so many people?"
The playground was built completely by local volunteers with donations from the community.
"I was one of the volunteers and I'm very angry someone would do this to the children and the citizens of the city of Kentwood," says Ron Woods, Director of Kentwood Public Works Department.
"I'm just devastated its gone. I brought my daughter and my niece here," says Tiffany Wafula.
Fire officials are still investigating and looking for witnesses.
"Arson has certainly not been ruled out, and we're looking for information from anyone who has seen anything," says Brent Looman, Fire Chief for Kentwood Fire Department.
The damage is estimated at around $50,000.
"I'd love to see it rebuilt, but it was a large effort to get this together in the first place, and it's pretty much a total loss," says Woods.
"I hope they find the people responsible and hopefully rebuild it," says Hommes.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Kentwood Fire Department or police.
