Muskegon, MI (WZZM) Grand Rapids developer Jon Rooks says he sees untapped potential in Muskegon, and to better supervise his many projects, he is moving the headquarters of his Parkland Properties to Muskegon.
"I think all of west Michigan has a good future especially the lake shore communities, but I think Muskegon has the most untapped potential," says Rooks.
Tuesday the Muskegon Commission agreed to sell Rooks the city's old fire station for $1.00.
In return, Rooks promises to renovate and move his company office to the building.
City leaders say everyone benefits from the deal.
"We get property tax," explains Muskegon Vice-Mayor Lawrence Spataro. "Jobs will be created and activity created that will support other downtown businesses. We benefit and, I think, Mr. Rooks will benefit."
Rooks and Parkland Properties has already renovated several buildings in Grand Rapids. The company entered the Muskegon market in 2009 when Rooks acquired the Shorline Inn and Terrace Point Marina.
His future plans include transforming a downtown bank building into apartments and creating a residential development on Muskegon Lake. "We are excited about our plans in Muskegon," says Rooks. "This is just an example of how one thing leads to another thing."
Rooks has 45 days to inspect the property and back out before the $1.00 deal for the fire hall is final. The city built a new fire station in 2007.
