BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (BATTLE CREEK ENQUIRER) A child was critically injured in a house fire at 17 Young St. in Battle Creek early this morning.
Battle Creek firefighters responded to the scene, at Young and Van Buren streets, at 2:01 a.m.
Battle Creek police said this morning that an 8-year-old girl was critically injured in the fire and taken to a Kalamazoo hospital. Firefighters had said earlier today that one person died and another was injured in the fire, but police said at mid-morning the girl was in critical condition at a Kalamazoo hospital.
Detective Sgt. Jim Martens, supervisor of the police departrment's detective bureau, said the cause remains under investigation but arson is a possible cause.
The blaze destroyed the two-story wood-frame home, valued at $40,000, and its contents, valued at $20,000, firefighters said. They listed Janeen Johnson as the home's occupant.
