Annual Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- More than 4,000 farmers and agriculture professionals from all over the country and Canada will gather in Grand Rapids for The Annual Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo on Tuesday, December 4 through Thursday, December 6.

The event includes a trade show with nearly 400 exhibitors covering four acres of convention space. The event is not open to the public but what goes on there has a huge impact on the local and state economies.

"This is true economic impact for our community. Every time we can have a reason to attract new people and a new audience in our community, that brings thousands of dollars, millions of dollars of economic stimulus into our communities," said Janet Korn with Experience Grand Rapids, the agency responsible for bringing the expo to town.

Registered participants will attend education seminars covering a vast range of topics including: organic fruit production, social media for greenhouses, Cheese Making 101, hard cider production, crop forecasts and much more.

Sharri German, the trade show manager says "you get a better product in the stores because the grower gets better educated on what to do for their specific commodity and in general for the community this week brings in millions of dollars to the community in the way of restaurants and shopping and just everything."

Korn says the expo helps advance the farm-to-fork movement in West Michigan and promotes collaboration among farmers and restaurateurs.

"It positions Grand Rapids as the center of farm-to-fork eating as our restaurants are embracing agriculture," Korn said. "The beautiful thing about our community and our city is we have this beautiful vibrant downtown. But it is surrounded by a very rich agricultural community. We are perfectly positioned to host this group."
