GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Grand Rapids city commissioners are deciding how many police officers and firefighters could be laid off due to budget concerns.
Commissioners held a winter retreat Tuesday to discuss the city's budget.
The police department could lose 17 officers from the total of 292 on staff now. Police Chief Kevin Belk says the department has dropped more than 40 officers since 2009.
More than 40 firefighters could be gone by 2015. That's when a large group of firefighters will be eligible to retire. That is also when a temporary city income tax increase for public safety is set to expire.
Grand Rapids Fire has 227 firefighters on staff right now. Chief Laura Knapp hopes to keep a staff of around 190.
