GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- In one week, inmates will begin moving into a new section of the Kent County Jail that was dedicated on Monday.

"This is really a community wide project. This project provides for a safer community. It provides for an appropriate work environment for the many men and women who work in the facility and every day deal with the most dangerous people that are in our community," says Kent County Sheriff, Larry Stelma.

The renovation project took more than two years to complete, but Sheriff Stelma says the project finished under budget. The $27 million renovation includes more bed space, new technology, and updates to the building.

While the Sheriff says crews completed the project ahead of schedule, a crane collapse did delay construction. In February, operator error led to a 250 foot crane to fall on the new section of the jail. Two inmates and a construction worker were injured.
