GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Snow and ice Tuesday made for a slippery start for many morning commuters.
The Kent County Road Commission pulled out the salt trucks before the sun went up in an effort to get a head start on icy conditions. Work crews had everything under control around 7 a.m. when conditions started to get worse.
Jerry Byrne, Director of Maintenance for the Kent County Road Commissions says, "There was just a brief flurry of action that was heavy enough to turn some of the roads slippery, so we sent the crews out this morning on the main roads. They just put a real light application of salt down. Luckily that took care of it. So there was probably an hour, period of time, where the wheel tracks froze up, just that quick lake effect."
As for the rest of the winter, the road commission is ready to go. Due to a mild winter last year, they have plenty of left over salt.
