GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A man is in custody, facing charges of hit-and-run and drunk driving after investigators say he rear-ended an off-duty police officer.
The incident began around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Burton Street and Century Avenue SW.
Grand Rapids Police say an off-duty Wyoming officer was driving to work when his car was hit from behind by another vehicle. The other car hit the officer's vehicle several more times as the driver tried to leave the scene.
The officer caught up with the other driver at a parking lot near the scene. The officer, who had identified himself and tried to keep the man at the scene, got into a scuffle with the driver, who then drove away again.
Grand Rapids Police spotted the car parked near New Avenue and Graham St. NW a short time later. They spotted the driver and placed him under arrest.
Commanders say the Wyoming officer suffered a sore shoulder, but was headed to work anyway.
The suspect is also facing a charge of resisting and obstructing an officer in addition to operating under the influence and hit-and-run. His name is not being released until his first appearance in court.
