GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-A holiday tribute to West Michigan veterans is growing.

Saturday, volunteers and the Michigan Civil Air Patrol laid 126 wreaths on veteran graves outside the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. The ceremony is part of the annual Wreaths Across America project. Grand Rapids has been taking part in the program for seven years now, and it has grown to include more wreaths every year.

"It's a very humbling experience and it's a sense of real honor to be able to be a part of an international event that honors, remembers and teaches," says Maj. Keith Sikkema.

"It's very important for us to honor our military and show our respect for the people who protect our freedom," adds Sarah Nielsen, who brought her husband and three children along to lay wreaths.

The Civil Air Patrol would like to someday cover every veteran grave with a wreath.
