GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A driver is facing charges for a crash that killed a Grand Rapids woman.
It happened near the intersection of Third Street and Fremont Avenue NW just after 4 a.m. Saturday. Officers say a minivan hit a tree and the passenger, 22-year-old Michelle Caverley, ended up outside the vehicle.
The driver fled the scene, leaving Caverley behind. She died from her injuries.
"I was expecting to find two cars smashed up; I didn't expect to find somebody dead there," says Mary Garcia, who lives nearby where the crash happened.
Witnesses say Caverley lived across the street from where the accident happened.
Officers later located and arrested the driver. Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.
