(USA TODAY) - President Obama will be back at the White House on Thursday, cutting short his vacation to deal with the approaching "fiscal cliff."

Obama is scheduled to leave Hawaii late Wednesday, local time.

Congressional lawmakers will also be back in Washington, seeking to stave off a Jan. 1 deadline for the fiscal cliff, a series of tax hikes and budget cuts that take effect if the White House and Congress cannot agree on a debt reduction deal.

Obama and congressional Republicans are at odds over tax hikes and specific budget cuts that would be included in any agreement.

Many officials expect to be working right up to New Year's Eve, and perhaps beyond.

First lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha will remain in Hawaii.
