Officers were called to Dickinson Street SE near Calvin Avenue SE Saturday night for a possible shooting.
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- One man is dead and three other men are injured, after a shooting inside a home on Grand Rapids Southeast side.
It happened in the 1200 block of Dickinson Street Southeast, shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday. The mother of 34-year-old Jason Cherry says he was killed in her basement while playing cards with his friends.
Celia Cherry, describes her son as a gentle giant.
"He never tried to box or hurt anybody because of his size," says Cherry.
Cherry says she's both devastated about the loss of her son and furious it happened in her house.
"First I'm grieving my son; that's my baby. On the other side, I'm mad and angry that someone came into my home and violated my home," says Cherry. "If you're not safe in your own home, where do you go at?"
Cherry says her son was playing cards with friends, when she heard more people come in.
"We thought it might have been someone else coming in, having fun playing cards, until we heard the gun shots," says Cherry. "They came in and shot everyone that was there, all four of them, but my son was... murdered."
Jason Cherry's three other friends were taking to the hospital; one of them had life-threatening injuries.
Police don't have a motive but say it's unlikely the shooting was random. However, neighbors aren't taking any chances. Cory Dougan, who lives next door, is double checking his alarm and locking doors.
"I'll be a little more cautious and us as neighbors need to keep an eye out for each other," says Dougan.
However, police say the area is not a troubled spot.
"An incident of this magnitude is rare anywhere in Grand Rapids and certainly not a frequent occurrence in that area," says Lieutenant David Schnurstein with the Grand Rapids Police Department.
Investigators believe three or four suspects were involved. Both police and the grieving family want them found.
"I know my son is dead and gone and murdered, so I think somebody should pay for that," says Cherry.
The latest incident is the 18th murder in Grand Rapids this year, which is one more than last year, when Rodrick Dantzler went on a deadly rampage, killing seven people.
