GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - January 1 is the first day on the calendar but for a few families in West Michigan, it's also the first day of life for their newest additions.
The unofficial first birth of the new year happened at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, where first time mother, April Johnson delivered a baby girl. Shakiera Johnson was born at 12:04 a.m.
"I was on the couch and I started feeling pain and my mom kept telling me it was false labor, and I'm like 'it's not false labor because false labor shouldn't feel like this!'" said Johnson. "All my family came and it was just an experience I'm never going to forget."
April is originally from New Orleans and is unsure if she'll be staying in the Grand Rapids area.
But little Shakiera wasn't the only new baby of 2013.
At Metro Health in Wyoming, first time parents Ann VanLuven and Jessie Paxson welcomed their baby girl Addison Paxson. She was born at 9:02 a.m.
"I was at a Hockey game and he was at work out in Holland... my contractions were three minutes apart at the hockey game, so I was like, 'I think we should go to the hospital,'" says VanLuven.
"I don't even think it was the excitement of the game I just think she was ready to come," says new dad, Jessie Paxson.
