GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, (WZZM) - Getting fit is one of the most common New Year's resolutions, but how do you go about reaching your goals? Some say the key is finding a good health club or participating in group fitness.
At G-force Fitness, it's all about group classes.
"We need companionship, motivation, we need people there to help you get fit," says owner Jenn Nelson.
She started the no membership required gym three years ago. She was working at a fitness center that, she says, didn't always give customers what they thought they signed up for.
"People got good deals and just paid, but didn't use it. It was shady. Very shady, because when you say that you're in the fitness business, when your not, you're selling something that people aren't getting."
Phil Catlett with the Better Business Bureau of West Michigan says each year, fitness centers come ago. Often times customers are left without a gym and still bound by a contract.
"There are cases we've seen where a health club has gone out of business, but the financing for the membership still holds true, where you have to pay it all, even though it went out of business."
Catlett says you should thoroughly read the contract and be leery of great deals.
"The rule, if it's too good to be true, it probably is."
13 On Your Side checked with some of the area's biggest gyms. At the YMCA, you have to sign a one year contract. After that, you can go month-to-month and cancel at any time. Also right now, there is no enrollment fee. It's a decent deal, if you plan to use it.
"And like those pieces of equipment that sit in your basement un-used, health memberships are the same way," says Catlett.
Back at G-force Fitness, there are no contracts required. Each class cost $7 and if you like it and see results, the theory is you'll keep coming back.
