Harlem Globetrotter players pose with a fan after their "ice" game Monday afternoon.
PORTAGE, Mich. (WZZM) - The Harlem Globetrotters have played all over the world in arenas big and small. But Monday afternoon in Portage, they were in unfamiliar territory.
The Globetrotters played a noon game on the ice rink at Millennium Park. "This is my first ice game," says eight-year Globetrotter veteran Scooter Christensen. "They did it three years ago in New York City and it looked like so much fun. I'm glad they chose me to do it today."
The players wore special fittings on their basketball shoes to keep from slipping and sliding on the ice rink. "I've got my regular Globetrotter shoes but they gave me some cleats that go right inside there," said Christensen. "I can't move as well as I can on the court but well enough to have some fun out here for sure."
The Globetrotters did a portion of their comedic routine while embarrassing the hapless "Global Select" team Monday. The two teams will play their full-length game Tuesday night at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo and again at Van Andel Arena Sunday, January 27 at 2 p.m.
