GRAND RAPIDS - (WZZM) Violent crime like the recent murder of David and Vivian Bouwman might create a feeling of helplessness, but it doesn't have to. Organizations like Silent Observer offer the opportunity to not only give tips that could help solve crimes, but also allows you to give donations that can be used to give rewards.
There is a special reward to help solve the Bouwman murders that was provided by individuals and corporate donors, and a standard award to help in other cases.
"Someone that gives us a great tip that leads to the arrest of somebody we will offer up an award up to $1000 dollars," says Chris Cameron, Executive Director of Silent Observer.
In 2012 Silent Observer tips resulted in a number of high profile cases.
• The bank robberies that occurred at six banks were solved
• Two armed robbers that terrorized employees at six gas stations and a party store were arrested
• The suspect allegedly involved in the four motel/hotel robberies was arrested
• A suspect who stabbed a man outside a downtown bar was identified
The bottom line is that Silent Observer works. "Every year we receive thousands of tips and hundreds of people are arrested," says Cameron.
Of the tipsters that call in 60% don't claim their reward. "So most people call in because it is the right thing to do," explains Cameron.
