Cedar City, UT (Sports Network) - Tomas Sanchez tallied 18 points and five
assists as the Idaho State Bengals outlasted the Southern Utah Thunderbirds,
54-53, in a Big Sky Conference bout at Centrum Arena.
Chris Hansen put up 17 points and six rebounds for Idaho State (3-11, 2-3 Big
Sky), which has won back-to-back games for the first time all season. Melvin
Morgan struggled from the field (2-of-11), but he made all six of his free
throw attempts and finished with 10 points.
For Southern Utah (5-10, 3-3), Damon Heuir scored 17 points, while Jackson
Stevenett recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.
Both teams shot less than 36 percent from the floor in the first half.
Southern Utah attempted 11 more shots than Idaho State in the frame and took a
28-26 lead into intermission.
In a back-and-forth second half, the Thunderbirds took a 53-51 advantage with
2:27 left to play on a Stevenett 3-pointer. The Bengals answered on their next
possession with a Morgan bucket to tie it up, then following an empty
possession by Southern Utah, Hansen went 1-of-2 from the foul line to give
Idaho State the lead with 1:37 remaining. A Heuir 3-point attempt in the
waning seconds did not fall as the Bengals held on for the win.
Southern Utah was plagued by 16 turnovers, while Idaho State coughed it up
just 10 times.
