(DETROIT FREE PRESS) - "I think this is it."

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow was working the crowd, checking out the shiny inventory of cars and trucks and marveling at the striking reversal of fortunes experienced by the U.S. auto industry at the North American International Auto Show.

And she may just have found her next vehicle as she climbed out of the dark gray Cadillac ATS, named Monday morning as the NAIAS Car of the Year.

"There are just too many things here that I like," she said. "But my lease is up on my Chevy Cobalt."

More important than her own car needs, though, Stabenow said, was the positive energy at the 2013 show, revealing a marked difference from the pallor that hung over the show and the auto industry in recent years.

"The auto industry is back," she said. "It's like night and day. I don't even want to think about how we were feeling back in 2009 and 2010. But this is an incredible American success story. It's all about sheer will, determination and never giving up."
