WAYLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - Wayland finally has a new police chief. The job has been open for a year, but now former Lt. Steven Harper will take over.
Harper has served almost 26 years with the State Police, which included some time recently as Commander of the Wayland post. Before that, he was also Commander of the Lakeview and Rockford posts, along with the Hastings post before it merged with the one in Wayland.
City Manager Michael Selden chose him out of 26 candidates. He's filling the void left by Former Police Chief Dan Miller, who was suspended in January after a few months on medical leave. He was later fired in April.
Harper will start his job February 4, and says he is excited to "hit the ground running."
