KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - Nearly two weeks after the murder of an elderly Kentwood couple, the man police call a suspect in the killings is in custody.

David and Vivian Bouwman were found shot to death in their home on January 5. Friday afternoon, FBI agents arrested Javonte Higgins in Illinois.

A tip to the Grand Rapids Police Department sent the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force to the Chicago suburb of Blue Island.

FBI Special Agent Joan Hyde told WZZM 13, "The arrest took place out in the open in the area of 1750 broadway in Blue Island."

Investigators do not yet know if someone was hiding Higgins or how he got to the Chicago area.

Higgins is being held on outstanding warrants from Wyoming for breaking and entering and fleeing and eluding police. The Kent County Prosecutor will be looking at evidence to pursue further charges related to the double murder.

Kentwood Police Chief Tom Hillen said there is physical evidence that ties Higgins to the Bouwman murders, but he could not elaborate because the investigation is ongoing.

Hillen did say he was pleased to announce the arrest of Higgins. "The community can feel safer now." He also believes more people may come forward with information since Higgins is now in custody.

Silent Observer released a statement Friday afternoon that the reward for information that leads to arrests in the Bouwman case had grown to $10,200.
