MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)- A Muskegon County woman is dead after driving her car into the Muskegon River.
Sergeant David Wypa with the Muskegon Township Police says 54-year-old Theresa Duell died about eight hours after being pulled from the water.
Witnesses say Duell drove through a dead end on Creston Road, onto a boat launch and into the Muskegon River just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Witnesses say Duell rolled down her window and escaped, but they lost sight of her as her car sank.
Two Muskegon Township firefighters found Duell unconscious and face down in the water about ten minutes later. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died just after 11 a.m. Saturday.
Wypa says he's seen several similar accidents happen at the boat launch, but the area is well lit and there are multiple signs warning drivers about the dead end.
An autopsy on Duell will take place in Lansing Sunday.
