Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Stephen Holt scored 13 points and grabbed six
rebounds as the Saint Mary's Gaels cruised to a 60-38 decision over the
Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference rout at the Chiles Center.
Brad Waldow added 12 points and five boards for the Gaels (15-4, 4-1 WCC), who
also received 11 points and six assists from Matthew Dellavedova. SMC has now
won three in a row and seven of its last eight games.
None of the Pilots (8-12, 1-4) managed to score in double-figures. Kevin
Bailey, Thomas Van Der Mars, and Oskars Reinfelds tallied seven points
each for Portland, which shot just 23.3 percent from the floor in the contest.
Ryan Nicholas grabbed 10 rebounds as the Pilots endured their second straight
setback.
SMC took a 29-19 lead into the break after it limited the hosts to 29.2
percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Gaels made 44.0 percent of
their field goal tries including 4-of-7 from distance in the first half to
help build their double-digit advantage.
The Pilots were unable to rally back after going just 3-of-19 from the field
and missed all five of their 3-point attempts in the second half. SMC
outscored Portland, 18-6, after the intermission.
The 3-point arc played a vital role, as the Gaels scored 18 points from
distance to the Pilots' total of six.
