GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Instead of having a day off, Davenport University staff and students are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day all day long.
At 12:30 p.m. there will be a silent march, beginning at the Lettinga Auditorium at 6191 Kraft Ave. Participants will walk all around campus. This is to celebrate the memory of Doctor King, and display a message of peace.
At 1 p.m. there will be a celebration and call to action at the Lettinga Auditorium. Here there will be guest speakers, music, and reflections from Davenport students, staff, and other members of the community.
At 3:30-6:30 p.m. you are being asked to participate in community service. One project is being held at the downtown YMCA at 475 Lake Michigan Drive NW.
At 6:30-8:30 p.m. will be the 27th annual commemoration ceremony at the GRCC Ford Fieldhouse. A few students will also be awarded scholarships at this time.
The following day, Tuesday January 22 at 10 a.m., Judge Glenda Hatchett is being featured in the discussion, "Saving our Generation." This will also be at the Lettinga Auditorium.
Everyone in the public is asked to participate in any, or all of these events, to promote using this day off, as a day to continue the works of Dr. King.
