Alpine Ave. & Myrtle St. NW (January 21, 2013)
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - After a standoff in a Northwest side house, a suspected armed robber is in custody, the mother of his infant child is dead of an apparent suicide, and the couple's two-month-old daughter is in the care of grandparents.
The chain of events began about 2:30 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Alpine Avenue. There, Grand Rapids Police issued a search warrant at a house which is located near Myrtle Street and a 7/11 convenience store.
Police were investigating an armed robbery and first placed Oliver Salinas, 18, under arrest. But officers could not search his home for evidence because his girlfriend, inside with their baby, would not open the door. While officers were considering their next move they heard a loud bang inside the house.
"There is just no need for it to come to this ending," said Capt. Dan Savage of the Grand Rapids Police Department.
Authorities entered the house and found the woman dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The infant inside was not hurt.
"As soon as we had our special response team up on the front porch, they could see the infant. When they forced the front door they were directed to go in and get the infant out of the situation and we did that," said Savage.
Police say it's unclear what, if any role the mother of the two-month-old infant may have played in the armed robbery. Relatives say she was ust 18 years old.
