GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The murder rate in Grand Rapids actually dropped slightly last year, but the number of violent crimes is up. That's according to a new report by the police department.
Police commanders say 16 people were murdered in 2012. That number was adjusted from 18 in previous reports, as two of the cases turned out to be "justifiable homicide."
Rape also dramatically declined, but robbery, aggravated assault, larceny and arson all increased.
Six of the 16 murders last year took place in december, sparking the "Stop It Community Initiative" to end the violence. The next meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at LIFEQUEST Ministries, 1050 Fisk St. SE.
